To explain complex and abstract concepts, such as the soul and body’s relationship, Ilchi Lee often resorts to metaphor. Here is one of his best, “The body is to the soul as the car is to its driver. The car exists for the driver, not the driver of the car. A car is precious when it has a driver. Without a driver, though, a car is nothing but a heap of scrap metal. The body will vanish sooner or later, like an old car rusting away in a junkyard. Our bodies are growing old and wearing out, just like old cars. A look at our bodies right now shows that they are used articles. And we’ll have to go to the junkyard someday. We should abandon this car of ours after putting it to plenty of good use. This car exists for the soul. Though our bodies die, our souls do not die. This means that our souls do not belong to our bodies. Our emotions and desires die along with our bodies. This body is precious to us because we have a soul. The body exists for the growth and completion of the soul.”
