The Brave One

I saw an interesting movie called “The Brave One” starring Jodie Foster.  She is a New York City radio journalist who, with her fiancee, are beaten by a gang in Central Park while walking their dog.  She survives but her fiancee does not.  After she recovers, she is covered in fear and rage and buys a gun as a form of protection.  After her purchase she begins witnessing criminal acts and uses the gun as a form of self-defense and after several incidents she begins to use it in an offensive way, to combat the criminals in the town.   She becomes a vigilante and her target is to find the ones who committed the crime on her and her fiancee.

The film is well acted and directed…I had some issues with the storyline, especially whether it is right to take the life of someone because they have done something to you, and what is the meaning of revenge.  Revenge seems to be based in emotions, not your true self.   And when you take revenge on someone, would it really help you?  Or would it just temporarily quell the rage and despair?  The main character said that after her beating, she changed, she was never someone who lived in fear, but after this incident, someone different emerged and she couldn’t go back to her old self.

Deep down, there is a lot of fear in us.  It is difficult to feel but it is something to be faced and dealt with.  I guess it is important to realize that fear, in itself, is an emotion, but not who you really are.

If anyone else has seen this movie, what is your opinion?
